How UAE GPSSA pension contributions work

UAE national employees in the private and government sectors are enrolled in the General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) scheme. Both the employee and employer contribute a percentage of the employee's pensionable salary (typically basic salary plus housing allowance) every month.

Commonly cited contribution rates

Employee: 11%  ยท  Employer: 15%  ยท  Total: 26% of pensionable salary

The eventual pension payout at retirement depends on your average pensionable salary and total years of contribution, calculated under a separate accrual formula set by GPSSA. Because pension rules were reformed under Federal Decree-Law No. 57 of 2023, this calculator focuses on the monthly contribution amount rather than projecting a retirement payout โ€” confirm your specific payout with GPSSA.

Frequently asked questions

Does this apply to expatriate employees?

No โ€” expatriate employees in the UAE are not part of the GPSSA scheme. They instead receive an end-of-service gratuity; see our Gratuity Calculator.

Is the pensionable salary the same as my full salary?

Usually it's basic salary plus housing allowance, but the exact components used can vary โ€” check your payslip or with GPSSA/your employer's HR team.

Are the rates the same in every Emirate?

GPSSA covers UAE nationals federally, though Abu Dhabi has historically had its own pension fund (ADPF) with potentially different rates โ€” confirm which scheme applies to you.
