How the overall IELTS band score is calculated

Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your four section scores — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — rounded to the nearest whole or half band using IELTS's official rounding rule.

Rounding rule

A fractional part below .25 rounds down to the nearest whole band.
A fractional part of .25 to .74 rounds to the nearest half band.
A fractional part of .75 or above rounds up to the next whole band.

Example: section scores of 6.5, 7.0, 6.0 and 6.5 average to 6.5 exactly, so the overall band is 6.5.

Frequently asked questions

Does every institution use this same overall band?

Test centres and IELTS itself use this exact averaging and rounding method for the overall band shown on your Test Report Form. Some universities may set separate minimum requirements per section on top of the overall band.

Can I get a .25 or .75 overall band?

No — IELTS overall bands are always reported as a whole or half band (e.g. 6.0, 6.5, 7.0), which is why the rounding rule exists.
